In late 2006, Salinas Energy was faced with the challenge of putting together a regional understanding of California’s Southern San Joaquin Basin to unlock remaining exploration potential in this mature, yet still highly prospective basin. As a relatively new start-up on the Australian Stock Exchange, the company needed a quick injection of technical support to assist with this process.

Salinas engaged Isis Petroleum Consultants to put together a Sequence Stratigraphic Framework for the basin. Led by Sequence Stratigrapher Dr Gary Powis, Isis rapidly built a sequence stratigraphic framework that unlocked a new generation of plays within key productive sequences in the basin.

This work lead to a more detailed prospectivity evaluation of the region, involving as many as 6 geoscientists, with a total of 4 key play fairways identified. In total, Salinas and Isis together devoted over 5,000 work hours to the project, which delivered a portfolio of over 30 prospects and leads. Already one prospect has been drilled, and two more are mature for drilling in 2008. The first well drilled in the program flowed clean oil, and the commercial value is still being determined. The next two wells are in the final stages of Farmout.

Salinas Energy values its relationship with Isis Petroleum Consultants. Isis has provided a wide range of technical expertise to our organization, and has been a significant contributor to our technical understanding in California.
